Bring your pencils and pyjamas to Catalyst for 24 Hour Comics- the annual, international events challenges individuals to produce a 24 page comic written, drawn and completed in 24 consecutive hours. From the Official 24hr Comics website: On August 31st, 1990, Scott McCloud (Understanding Comics), originator of the 24 Hour comic concept, completed his first creative marathon. On April 24th, 2004 Nat Gertler organized the first 24HCD bringing together legions of participants all over the world in this annual event. In the years since, thousands have tried and many have succeeded in creating their own 24 hour comics. This event was held in assocation with Queen Street Digital Studios. Participants are advised to bring their own materials, something cosy to doze in and their own choice of food There was a series of mystery film screenings after 9pm. Catalyst Arts is pleased to present an exhibition by Japanese artist Kiyoshi Takahashi.

Kiyoshi Takahashi¹s work often consists of bold, simple, iconic images, especially exaggerated words and forms. The prototypical words and letters contain a sense of power, energy and strong will. The work’s have the initial impact of the exuberant world of the Manga comics.

His work is characterized by traditional themes and techniques of Japanese calligraphy combined with popular mass culture, such as advertising, comic books emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any given culture.

The listener must position himself underneath one of the Soundspots. On this spot he hears music coming from the traditional speakers. These sounds mingle with the music coming from the Soundspots, consequently resulting in a polyphonic texture of timbres. The listener can influence this polyphonic result by moving through the spatial environment or by positioning himself underneath one of the other Soundspots.

Heike Kaltenbrunner – About life and death of neutron stars and TVsets

Loops of pulsar-signals- transposed to the frequencies of the audible spectrum- as well as the live stream of a radio telescope are assigned to a multiple speaker scenario. The signals are split and also fed to tube monitors which interpret them as horizontal and vertical lines. The sounds of the ‘dead’ stars thus generate pictures and slowly destroy the cathode tubes and burn the screen- until they end with a last flash.

Daniel Bisig, John Flury, Martin Neukom – ISOkaeder
They present an acoustic and visual installation that forms part of a project entitled ISO (Interactive Swarm Orchestra). ISO employs swarm simulations to control sound synthesis, signal processing and sound positioning. Visitors can interact with the swarm simulation via camera-based tracking and thereby affect the generation and spatial distribution of the resulting music. The installation consists of an aluminium scaffold in the shape of a dodecahedron that creates an internal space for interaction and 3D sound perception. The installtion set up also comprises a video projection that displays a real time visualization of the swarm’s activities.

Catalyst Arts presents The Garden Project

The Garden Project runs for the whole summer and builds on the ideas of growth and regeneration prevalent in the city.

The project consists of a group exhibition of four artists; Miriam de Burca/Belfast, Aoife Desmond/Dublin, Sandy Smith/Glasgow and Rupert White/Cornwall, in Catalyst Arts. Running alongside, is an extensive programme of events and activities taking place in the gallery, around the city and further afield.

The focus of the Garden Project is (re)development, with workshops such as seed-bomb making, sandcastle building, moss graffiti and visits from organic farmers and environmental consultants. It is hoped that the influence of these workshops, events and gatherings will extend beyond the timeframe of the project itself, resulting in a greater long-term awareness of our current environment and the city of Belfast.

The exhibition will be focused on the specifics of place, relating the themes of the project to the city, to the gallery space and to the nature of Catalyst itself.

Urban renewal, architectural injustice, botanical anarchy and larking about on the river are all on the cards for this summer long series of events!

Artists’ Short Films Evening

 

Screenings take place: Thursday 5th June at 9PM in Catalyt’s Garden Theatre.

Catalyst Arts presents an evening of Artists’ Short Films, comprised of the most exciting fimmakers from across the UK and Ireland.

In the final days on the Members Show Catalyst is providing the oppurtunity for artists and filmmakers to show their work and view that of their contemporaries.

Perfopuerto Publication Launch

Date: 3 May 2008

PerfoPuerto was an exhibition residency at Catalyst Arts with nine Chilean artists in December 2007 that was part of FIX 2007. The nature of the event was time based (the artists spent two weeks in Belfast) but its legacy, a fully illustrated book, has been in progress ever since. Saturday May 3rd 5-7pm sees the launch of this book and like the event itself it will be active, engaging and forward-looking.

Sofia Greff (Transylvania/Frankfurt) and Alejandra Herrera (Chile)both performance artists, will be responding to the space and the project, simultaneously introducing and reminding people the activity and movement that is PerfoPuerto.

Sofia Greff was not part of the original Perfopuerto, her response to it is based on incorporating her art into the living , yet the longevity of such activities can only be assured through the validity of such a response. Alejandra Herrera was part of the Perfopuerto process but due to a bureaucratic error was unable to make it to Belfast to participate.

Exclusive screening of video work from the Catalyst Arts archive

As part of the Artist Led Archive exhibition we are screening a selection of video work from the Catalyst Arts archive, featuring locally and internationally recognised artists.

Also taking place on Thursday evening Flaxart artist-in-residence Sean Miller presents…Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree and JEMA galleries…

The John Erickson Museum of Art (JEMA) is a location variable museum founded by Sean Miller. It has opened at Schalter Gallery (Berlin), Irish National Museum (Dublin), Deitch Art Parade (New York), Howard House (Seattle), Aqua Art (Miami Beach), and ACC Galerie (Weimar, Germany). The museum has exhibited artists such as: John Feodorov, Gregory Green, Arnold Mesches, Yoko Ono, Bethany Taylor, Sean Taylor, Sergio Vega, and others. The current projects exhibiting at JEMA in Belfast are Yoko Ono IMAGINE PEACE and Gregory Green’s, Caroline A NEW FUTURE, A Project of the New Free State of Caroline.

Collectors are invited to compare, wear and share the dust and in doing so celebrate the beauty of this misunderstood fine art product. Entropy offers collectors and endless supply of striking dust samples composed of tiny castaway pieces from selected institutions, decaying art, art audiences, artists, and art administrators. Microscopic photography reveals the high aesthetic properties in art museum dust and its uncanny relationship to modernist abstraction.

The newest product from the Art Museum Dust Collection is Art Museum Drink Coasters. Art audiences everywhere may enjoy their favorite beverage while placing dust images on tables or fine surfaces. Especially designed as a performance for museum events, the coasters bearing dust imagery may be spread about art spaces as people enjoy cultural events.
