A Quick Fux, a day of live performance and live art at Catalyst Arts. The day included durational performance and video booth, an invitation to watch fireworks and a Catalyst Arts Dance Off Party.

Reiko Aoyagi and David Nechak are artists invited by Catalyst to create new site integrated work. David Nechak was participant on the Flax International Artists Residency Programme. Both artists are concerned with the specics of space and the relationships between internal, personal space and outer physical space. The installation created focussed on the fluid relationship and tension between the two. Reiko Aoyagi’s work was made on site at Templecourt buildings on North Street, Belfast and in the Exchange Place Alleyway, adjacent to Catalyst Arts. David Nechak made a sculpture, placed in the Catalyst gallery back yard and presented a performance complementing the sculpture.
A slide talk by both artists was held at the Golden Thread Theatre, Monday 4th October 99.

Two performance groups from Kingston, Upstate New York presentesd an evening of spoken word, performance poetry and music. Part of an Ulster to Ulster exchange project, i.e.between Kingston, in New York State and Belfast, in County Antrim/Down.

Lengua de Trapo is the first part of an exchange between Catalyst Arts and LAE Sferazul, Valencia. The project focuses upon language and the extent to which it defines or confines within culture.

For the production and promotion of the prototype. Artists, designers and musicians were asked to create material which is formulated to be reproducible. The exhibition simulated a shop and was housed in the upstairs space in the clothes shop Diesel@Ltd in Queen Street, Belfast. Catalyst collaborated with Manchester based artist/curator Joanne McGonigle.
The exhibition travelled to The Art Fiend Foundation in New York 24/11-8/12 1999.

Seven artists took part in Ground: Paul Dignan, Jill Henderson, Imelda Heron, John Mathers, Jim McKevitt, Jane Millar and Paul Rooney. Selected to represent diverse approaches to contemporary painting. The exhibition intended to develop the context of modern painting. The show also included a seminar with speakers, Francis McKee Gavin Murphy and Paul Dignan, the seminar explored the role of painting, recognising that painting today encompasses a variety of activities and practices.

Transforming the pain and frustration of the ubiquitous rejection letter, seven artists converged on Belfast to unwrap a surprise package of new work. The exhibition featured the work of artists from Dublin & Glasgow.

A project set within the Waterfront Hall involving artists dealing with aspects of architecture design and land use. Works will be sited throughout the building rather than in the designated exhibition areas. Inclusive in the project was a seminar entitled ‘Correlation’s in Contemporary Art, Architecture and Theory’, dealing with wider concerns of the current relationships between art and architecture.

Locating and placing live / timebased art work on the move the project travelled to the Street level in Glasgow, Globe Gallery in North Shields, Dean Clough in Halifax, Hull Time Based Arts in Hull, 3 Month in Liverpool and Connected in Sunderland showing artists from each of the above locations. Over 30 artists were involved and at each venues there were large audiences ranging from 350 ( Street Level Glasgow ) to 120 ( Globe Gallery , North Shields ). The exhibition demonstrated both Catalyst Arts importance as an artist run organisation in the UK and its ability to work with other artist run organisations, establishing a strong network of like minded centres. The project also took on an innovative approach which enabled it to reach a large number of people many of who would not normally attend art events.

A project bringing the best of contemporary art happening in the neighbouring cities of Glasgow, London, and Amsterdam featuring Casco from Utrecht, Bank Productions from London. The event, tongue in cheek, places Belfast at the centre of artist driven activities surrounded by the ‘would be’ centres such as Glasgow, London, Utrecht and New York. The groups selected for the event are the cream of artist led initiatives from each of these centres. The exhibition explored the erosion of notions of cultural centres and periphery.

Based on the original Nomades Territoires project this festival included discussions by one of the founders of Nomades Territoires, Nathalie Perault (Québéc), performances by Richard Martel (Québéc), Julie Bacon (Hull) and Valentin Torrens (Barcelona). A visual exhibition entitled Cultural Baggage which contained suitcases from 18 countries ran alongside and the project was contextualised through a seminar hosted by Dr. Slavka Sverakova. This project ties in with the Quebecois festival in Belfast.

A one day installation featuring the work of Mathew Smith. The artist will be projecting a series of images into the gallery, depicting false exits, walkways and escape routes out of the space. The work deals with the idea of transition, from one space to another, and also deals notions of the unattainable.

Catalyst Arts gave the opportunity to the relatives of artists to show off their own creative talents. Parents, children, siblings, extended relations and friends contributed a wide variety of works to give a unique insight to the artist backgrounds to our most prolific artists. Nep-O-tism featured work by over 100 families and friends of Catalyst members. The work included ranged from quilt-making to a martial arts demonstration.

free for all is the first annual Catalyst Arts members exhibition which will be opening at Exchange Place on the Wednesday 23rd 7-9pm and continuing until Friday 16th December 1994

50 members are participating in the exhibition and, considering the muti-disciplined nature of members’ work, the exhibition will represent wide range of approaches not necessarily confined to to ‘visual ‘art.
Catalyst Arts membership extends internationally. The participants in free for all come from Ireland North and South, England, Scotland, Canada, Austrailia, Spain, Denmark and Romania.
The constantly expanding membership which is currently standing at 90 plays a crucial role as a support to the Catalyst Arts organisation and has acted as a network for ongoing communication in the form of ideas, exchanges and projects.
As the final show of ‘94, Exchange Place’s inaugural year; the first membership show; and in keeping with the festive time of year; the exhibition will be a celebration of the year and a look forward to’95.

Conference on Art and Limitations:
Northern Ireland: October 27th to 31st, 1994
The format for this unique conference will be that of an interactive art expedition. It will take place over the four days in four different locations in Northern Ireland: Newcastle, County Down; White Park Bay, North Antrim ; Derry and Belfast. There will be approximately forty participants- all will travel together by coach and stay together In hostel accommodation.
It is intended that there be six art practitioners of varied disciplines who will lead workshops/seminars/lectures over the first three days. The format for each session will be entirely up to the individual artists, with a guideline emphasis on interaction and debate.
On the fourth day, the group will return to Belfast for a full day of debate and discussion. This will be open to all corners. The structure of the day will be negotiated by the expedition group.

An exchange involving Belfast based artists Toby Dennett and Karen Vaughan and Budapest artists Tibor Zietineki and Agnes Szabics.
From the 29 August the 4 artists, who have nothing in common at all apart from the fact that they are visual artists, will work alongside each other in the studios of Catalyst Arts for 3 weeks.
They dont know what will happen or what will be the outcome….
The studios will be open to the public so that they can view the work in progress.
An exhibition of the work produced will be open from Wednesday 21 September to Saturday 1 October 1994.
On Tuesday 6 September at 7.30pm the artists will give a slide presentation of their work and discuss practising art in 2 differing cultures.
